Gateshead have launched an urgent probe into reports that FIFA has imposed a fresh registration ban on the club, just months after their last embargo was lifted. The National League side confirmed they only learned of the potential ban last week, despite it allegedly being in place since May. With Lee Cattermole’s first season as manager under way, the timing could not be worse for a club already battling to stay clear of the drop.
What’s behind the FIFA registration ban claim?
The Football Association is now investigating the new allegations, which mirror the crisis that hit local rivals South Shields 12 months ago. That ban stemmed from a historic transfer involving defender Harrison Clark, who joined after a spell with Livingston in Scotland. Gateshead were only removed from FIFA’s banned list in early July, just in time to register new signings and contracts ahead of a dramatic 2025/26 campaign.
Yet the club insists it has faced no issues registering its lone summer addition, former Sunderland academy defender Tommy Lavery, nor the updated deals handed to Fenton John and Josh Home. FIFA’s website currently lists Gateshead among clubs under a registration freeze, though the club claims it received no prior warning before last week.
How will this affect Gateshead’s summer plans?
Cattermole’s side have already played three pre-season friendlies, including a 6-0 thrashing of Northern League side Blyth Town. Two draws followed at Heaton Stannington and National League North newcomers Hebburn Town, with the manager praising his players’ physical response to physical challenges. The next step is a home friendly against Newcastle United’s first team on July 26, a clash that could draw a strong Magpies squad across the Tyne.
Despite the off-field noise, work to bolster the Heed ranks continues. Cattermole told reporters: “We chucked the Heaton friendly in and that was a good test on a long pitch. They were a big, physical team, they loaded our box, it was like a cup tie and it was great seeing the lads stand up to that.” He added: “You could see a lot of stuff we have been working on and there is a team being shaped there.”

With 50 points from 46 games, Gateshead sit 18th in the National League, 58 points adrift of leaders York. Their recent form reads LLWWD, while their goal difference stands at minus 36 after conceding 90 and scoring 54. The last result, a 3-1 loss at Altrincham on April 25, left the Heed on a four-game winless streak.
Cattermole’s focus remains on tightening the squad’s shape before the league curtain-raiser. “We know where we are at, teams will be well-drilled and we will be the same,” he said. “We are sure we can get it right.” The club has approached both FIFA and the FA for further comment as it seeks clarity on the registration freeze claims.
