Gateshead has appointed Lee Cattermole as their new first-team manager on a two-year deal. The 38-year-old former Sunderland, Middlesbrough, and Wigan midfielder will begin work immediately at the International Stadium.

What happened?

Cattermole agreed to terms after talks with interim chairman Graham Wood over the last fortnight. He will work alongside Ben Clark, who signed a long-term deal earlier this month to continue as first-team coach.

Why it matters for Gateshead

Gateshead is currently 18th in the National League with 50 points from 46 games, having scored 54 goals and conceded 90. Their recent form has been 1W-0D-4L, with their last result being a 3-1 loss to Altrincham on 2026-04-25.

What comes next?

Cattermole is enthusiastic about the role and views Gateshead as a club that offers opportunities to first-time managers. He intends to set clear standards and aims to be consistent while the squad learns and progresses.
