New Signing Steur Shines in Debut
In what was Newcastle's first fan-facing friendly of the summer, young midfielder Sean Steur played 90 minutes against Gateshead. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Luke Supyk putting Gateshead ahead early and Ben Williams scoring an own goal to equalize for Newcastle.
Manager Eddie Howe made several changes to his lineup, with Fabian Schar returning from injury after missing action since January. Despite the friendly nature of the game, it offered a valuable opportunity for Steur to showcase his abilities in front of fans.
Potential for Growth and Adaptation
Steur's journey to Newcastle is noteworthy; he left Ajax at 18 years old as part of a deal worth up to £23m. This move represents a calculated risk by the club, given that academy graduates rarely leave such clubs at this age and fee.
During his debut for Newcastle, Steur demonstrated technical ability, composure, and vision against Gateshead. However, Howe acknowledged that Steur will require time to adjust to the physicality and intensity of the Premier League. The young midfielder's performance was praised by the manager, who stated: 'He played really well today. He can be really pleased with his performance and first showing in Newcastle colours.'
Newcastle's pre-season preparations continue on Wednesday, 29 July, as they face Bristol City at 19:30 BST.
