Gateshead's search for a league win goes on after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Altrincham on Tuesday night. Josh Knowles scored the only goal after 21 minutes to consign the Heed to a fifth consecutive loss.

The result leaves Gateshead rooted to the foot of the National League, with just four points from their opening 11 fixtures. They have now conceded 25 goals this season, the worst defensive record in the division.

Knowles' decisive moment came midway through the first half, finishing a move that cut through the home defence. Gateshead's Jordan Robinson was shown an early yellow card after just eight minutes, setting a combative tone. Altrincham's Max Kosylo and Jay Cooper were also booked in a physical contest.

The visitors had a chance to double their lead from the penalty spot in the 81st minute, but Knowles saw his effort saved, offering Gateshead a brief reprieve that they could not capitalise on.

With the defeat, Gateshead's recent form reads five straight losses, including heavy defeats to Wealdstone and Southend United. They must now regroup quickly for a key home fixture against eighth-placed Worthing this Saturday.
