Gateshead Football Club is set to build a new 3G pitch in memory of 14-year-old Tomasz Oleszak, who was murdered in 2022. The £868,000 grant from the Football Foundation will allow the club to expand into disability and walking football. Tomasz was a keen footballer and played for Gateshead Cleveland Hall Community Association for much of his childhood. The loss of Tomasz hit everyone at the club extremely hard, according to association leader Andrew Watling. The new pitch will provide the opportunity for thousands of youngsters to participate in sport over the decades to come. It will also allow the club to expand further into disability and walking football, as well as establish a defined and exclusive day of the week for women's and girls' football. The development will represent a significant improvement on the existing grass pitch, which struggles to manage the amount of usage required in the wet winter months.
