Two men have appeared in court after a suspected double stabbing on a football pitch in Gateshead. Rakan Al Asafrah and Ammar Alrahman, who are both non-UK nationals, are suspected of attacking two males in Windmill Hill Park, on St Cuthbert's Road, in Gateshead, on Sunday evening. A court heard that both men suffered stab or slash wounds to either their body or leg and were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Gateshead, for treatment. One man needed life-saving surgery, prosecutors said. Police launched an investigation and Al Asafrah, 26, of Westgate Road, Newcastle, and Alrahman, 24, of Osbert Place, in Newton Aycliffe, were arrested earlier this week. Both men have now appeared at Newcastle Magistrates' Court charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a bladed article. Prosecutor, Chike Anieto, said the alleged stabbing took place at around 9pm on Sunday, June 7. Mr Anieto added: 'This case is in relation to GBH with intent. 'The defendants appear before you and this matter must go to the crown court. The possession of a bladed article is linked, so must go to the crown court also. 'In relation to this matter, it allegedly took place on a football pitch in Gateshead.' Mr Anieto said the one of the suspected victims suffered a 10cm slash to his leg, while the other was stabbed in the body. The prosecutor added: 'Following an investigation by police, the defendants were arrested. The defendants now appear before you in court today in relation to these matters.' Speaking through an Arabic interpreter, Al Asafrah and Alrahman confirmed their names, date of births and address during the hearing. Because of the seriousness of the allegations against them, they were not asked to enter pleas. Magistrates remanded both men in custody to next appear at Newcastle Crown Court on July 8.
